I. Introduction
|
A. | History |
|
Once a provincial women’s normal school, the university founded Program for Early Childhood Teacher Education in 1947, a three-year program recruiting female junior high graduates . In 1964, the university underwent a name change to become Taiwan Provincial Taipei Girl Teachers’ Junior College; a year later Continuing Education Program for Early Childhood Education was founded, replacing Program for Early Childhood Teacher Education. In 1983, the university established a program for early childhood education and began recruitment of high school and vocational school graduates for a two-year program in early childhood education (currently discontinued).
In 1990, Department of Early Childhood Education was founded (the first such department in Taiwan), which began recruiting high school graduates for a four-year pre-service teacher education program. Since 1990, the department started summer and night school program for in-service early childhood teachers (available in summer or night courses). The summer program discontinued in 2001; The night program also ended in 2003; The last students from these two programs graduated in 2005.
Beginning in 1999, the department began accepting kindergarten teachers into the Continuing Education Master Program in Early Childhood Education every other year. To this day, there are seven years of graduates from this in-service teacher education program. In 2002, the Graduate Institute of Child Development was founded. In 2004, Master Program in Early Childhood Education was founded. In 2006, Graduate Institute of Child Development was placed under Master Program in Early Childhood Education as Child Development Group. In 2011, Master Program in Early Childhood Education was renamed Early Childhood Group under Master Division of the Department of Early Childhood Education.
In August 2005, the university became Taipei Municipal University of Education, and since that time the department has kept its original name and was placed under School of Education. In August 2013, Taipei Municipal University of Education merged with Taipei Physical Education College to become University of Taipei. The department keeps its name and still belongs to College of Education. |
